John Theodore Matis, 84, Mosinee, passed away on February 10, 2021 with his family surrounding him. John was born on May 21, 1936, to the late John P. Matis, Jr and Mary H. Pazdur.

John married the love of his life, Dorothy Frodl, in 1960 and they were blessed with five children, 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, along with many special friends and family.

John graduated in 1954 from Mosinee High School, he was part of the 32nd Division of the Red Arrow, in support of the Berlin Crisis. After he returned, he worked at Wausau Metals for 44 years, while also working the family farm.

John loved to hunt, fish, camp, and garden. Always a jokester, he was an incredibly hard worker with a fantastic sense of humor. He was an avid bowler, threw a mean game of horseshoes and dominated a game of sheepshead. John loved a good party, especially when playing the concertina or dancing a polka. He was a Mr. Fix-it and the go-to-guy for parts and projects. He was often found putting around the farm on his red 4-wheeler or trying to conquer all weeds in the garden. John was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

John is survived by, his beloved wife Dorothy; children, Randy (Allison Slavick) Matis, Cable, Russell Matis, CO, Rodney (Sue) Matis, Michelle (Todd) Nechuta, and Melanie McAllister, all of Mosinee; grandchildren, Rochelle (Matthew) Gorski, Benjamin (Natasha) Nechuta, Marissa (Maverick) Ashbeck, Taylor Polka, Krista (Jordan Budnik) Polka, Ryan Polka, Destiny McAllister, Jordan Matis, Adam Lindner, Taylor Lindner, Forest (Melissa) Matis,; great-grandchildren, Connor Nechuta, Adalyn Matis and Easton Matis; a sister, Carol (David) Bittner; and brother, Harold (Janice) Matis; sisters-in-law, Adeline Wagner, IA, Florence Wagner, MN, Pat Frodl, Wausau; very special extended family, Marge Mackey, CO and Melanie S. Matis, Mosinee; Chris Polka, and Zach McAllister. Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by sister-in-law, Suzette Matis.

A memorial service will be at noon, Sat. Feb. 20, 2021 at St. Paul Catholic Church, Mosinee. The Rev. Donald Meuret will officiate. Burial will take place at St. Paul Cemetery immediately following the service. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until the time of the service all at the church. Beste Funeral Home, Mosinee, assisted the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at

A special thank you to the Mosinee Fire and EMS crews for your prompt arrival and steadfast dedication.

Rodney and family my sincere condolences on your dad's passing. As you know, I knew John
many years as a coworker at Wausau Metals. Two things standout as I think about John, if you want it done right...give it to John...the other thing is you don't mess with his overtime. Rod you know what I mean. I liked him and respected him...Rest In Peace John.
