Nora H. Doran, 94, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2022, at Copperleaf Memory Care, surrounded by her family.
She was born May 17, 1928, in Swinford, County Mayo, Ireland. Daughter of the late Thomas and Nora (Durkin) Hennigan. On Oct. 27, 1951, Nora married Seamus Doran in Chicago. He preceded her in death on March 12, 2016.
After growing up on small farm near Swinford, Ireland, Nora emigrated at age 18 to Chicago in 1947. She was deeply proud of her US citizenship. She married Seamus in 1951 at St. Bride Catholic Church in Chicago and raised seven sons. In 1970, she and her family moved to a farm in Mosinee where she resided until December 2018. The farm was in so many ways a great experiment in perseverance and hard work, two virtues that motivated her throughout her life.
In addition to her large family, she had many interests including: gardening, traveling to see her family in Ireland and England, a trip to the Holy Land, politics and current events, church circle, dance group, and visiting those in hospital and nursing homes. She loved her cups of tea but more for the company that was had by them. Perhaps her greatest highlight and joy was the companionship and support of her grandchildren. She always strongly believed and acted in helping those less fortunate than herself.
Over the years she wore many hats including: homemaker, farmer, working on endless house and farm projects, crossing guard, nurse assistant, cardiac monitor technician, CCD teacher and hospice volunteer. We look back fondly on the many family get-togethers she organized and wonderful meals she made for family and friends. She was a very dynamic and determined lady who was blessed with both great health and years.
Survivors, include seven sons, Thomas (Betsy) Doran, Mosinee, Kevin (Sheila) Doran, Galena, Ill., Brian (Colleen) Doran, Mosinee, Patrick (Beth) Doran, Colgate, Dermott (Lisa) Doran, Mosinee, Dan (Sue) Doran, Casco, and Owen (Cindy) Doran, Mount Horeb; 21 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. Sister, Mary Luchterhand, London, England. She was preceded in death by her sister Kathleen (Hennigan) Henry, and brothers John and Tom Hennigan.
