Gary A. Weldon, age 69, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at his home in Mosinee, Wisconsin. He was born in Madison, Wisconsin, on September 18, 1954, to the late John “Jack” Weldon and Jean (Gustin) Weldon.
Gary was an avid outdoorsman and made the most of indoor time. Some outdoor passions of his were hunting, fishing, tapping trees for sap to make maple syrup, as well as mushroom hunting and searching for arrowheads. Gary was greatly known for not only his excellent gardening skills but also the large garden and the number of fruit bushes and flowers that filled his yard. When inside, he enjoyed sitting with his dogs, watching old TV shows such as Andy Griffith, The Rifleman, and America’s Funniest Videos, drawing, cooking, and canning items from his garden. In the early 1990s, Gary designed and built a beautiful log house by hand in Hatley that included a two-story hand-laid stone fireplace and exposed beams large enough for him to stand on safely. Gary retired at 62 after working at Lignotech USA in Rothschild for 35 years. Following his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and dogs, as well as watching the deer and turkeys in his yard. He was a proud supporter of the military, and when he was not seen wearing his signature flannel shirt, he often wore a shirt or hat that supported the Air Force and Army. Gary is highly remembered for his storytelling abilities while keeping a straight face and usually convincing his audience what he was saying was true; causing them to laugh and smile at the time and in reflection of his stories.
Gary is survived by his son, Luke Weldon of Mosinee, two daughters, Serena Weldon of Mosinee and Annie (Eric) Weldon-Childress of Summerville, South Carolina; five grandchildren, Raz (Eve) Seliger, Allison Childress, Rylen Weldon, Weston Childress, and Sawyer Childress; his brother, John (Syl) Weldon, Jr., of Manitowoc; and his late Father’s significant other, Gibby McKinney. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, John “Jack” and Jean, and his two sisters, Sally Jo Weldon and Jacklynn Comstock.
A memorial service for Gary will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at River Park, Mosinee, WI, in the pavilion closest to the Mosinee River. Beste Funeral Home in Mosinee, WI, is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, any monetary donations will go toward a headstone for Gary, which will be placed in East Oasis Cemetery, where his parents are, at a later date.
