John A. Krieg, 92, Mosinee, died peacefully in the presence of his family, on Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, in the Evergreen Memory Unit at North Central Health Care Center, Wausau.
He was born Oct. 3, 1925, in Mosinee, the son of the late Sylvester and Ida (Runke) Krieg. He married Janice Hinckley on Oct. 2, 1948, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Mosinee. She survives.
John was a devoted husband of 69 years who valued his family above all else. He was truly the epitome of our greatest generation. He proudly served his country as a Marine during multiple campaigns in the Pacific during World War II. One of his most memorable and enjoyable experiences was being a part of one of the first WWII Honor Flights. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, hunting, biking with Elmer, fishing, and anything else that allowed him to be outside, even mowing the lawn. He passed these passions unto his children. He was also an athlete who boxed, played baseball, hockey (he loved hockey) and is the current reigning Mosinee city tennis champion. Being a proud Catholic, his devotion to the church guided him and influenced all aspects of his life. No matter where he was, he could find a church. John was known for his gentleness, humility and honesty. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends, his community, and anyone who was fortunate enough to have known him. Lord have mercy.
His family would like everyone to know that this disease never completely took his spirit. Up until hours before his death he still had his gleam in his eye and a smile.
Survivors, besides his wife, Janice, include his five children, Patricia “Posey” (Richard) Hirsch, Mosinee, Joseph (Deb) Krieg, Superior, Marie Janz, Peace Corps Armenia, Richard (Julie Ollmann) Krieg, Green Bay, and John (Michele) Krieg, Mosinee. Nine grandchildren: Gregory Hirsch and Keri Poremba; Tanya Krieg; Trishya Brown and Jake Krieg; Rebecca and Margaret Janz; and Jonathan and Nathan Krieg; seven great-grandchildren, Meridith, Matthew an Christina, Noah, Baiya, Ari and Hudson; a sister, Susan (Stanley) Hoffert, Ellison Bay; and a sister-in-law, Carol Krieg, Wausau. He was preceded in death by a brother, Sylvester, and two sisters, Vila Jene Krieg and Nona Mae Wilniski.
