Leander J. "Lee" Krieg

August 21, 1933 — March 15, 2021

Leander J. Krieg “Lee”, 87, Mosinee, was called by the Lord, Monday, March 15, 2021 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital with family by his side.

He was born August 21, 1933 in Halder, the son of William and Mayme (Deiler) Krieg. Lee grew up on the family farm and was the youngest of eleven children. He attended St. Robert’s School, formerly adjacent to St. Patrick’s Church in Halder and graduated from Mosinee High School.

Lee married the love of his life, Winnie “Win-Win” on June 2, 1962 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Mosinee. They raised 5 sons and 2 daughters together. Lee’s greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren, and his two favorite dogs, Duchess and Jasmine.

Lee worked as a paper testing lab technician at Mosinee Paper his entire career spanning 43 years. He worked 6 days a week for 35 years to support the growing needs of his family.

As a young man, Lee contracted polio and was told he may never walk again. Lee accepted the challenge with grace and worked tirelessly to overcome his physical disability. He embraced stewardship, giving generously of his time, talent, and treasure. Lee was a kind, hard-working, gentle man. He was always willing to lend a hand, wherever he was needed. He wrote the birthday, anniversary, and Christmas cards for St. Paul parishioners for many years with his beautiful penmanship. He was a family man with a deep faith rooted in God. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Lee prayed the rosary often and handmade over 15,250 rosaries from nylon twine with perfectly-spaced knots. These rosaries were given to family, friends, and the missions. He took pride in arts and crafts making hundreds of pot holders, pine cone and garland Christmas trees, and latch hook rugs. He loved the outdoors and was a proud member of the Bluebird Restoration Assn of WI, building hundreds of houses which propagated countless broods of his beloved bluebirds. Lee also enjoyed cultivating his garden each year, with a plentiful harvest of fresh vegetables. He also had a love for music and enjoyed playing his accordion. His favorite song was “I Love You Because” by Jim Reeves. He will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his children: William Krieg, Paul Krieg, Mary Kay Holzem (Scott), Mark Krieg, Lori Henry (Robert), Thomas Krieg, and Daniel Krieg (Stacie); his godchildren: Larry Shear and Gary (Robin) Shear; his grandchildren: Amanda Adams (Matthew), Lance Krieg, Alexa Krieg, Cole Krieg, Derek Krieg, Taya Henry, and Robert Henry Jr.; his great-grandson: Eli Adams; his sisters-in-law: Sharon Krieg, Donna Draeger, and Millie Richard; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Winnie, his parents, William and Mayme, and his sisters and brothers (in-law), Grace (Gerald) Fitzgerald, Gordon (Mary) Krieg, Esther (Art) Weis, Mary (Marshall) Shear, Doris Krieg, Bob Krieg, Francis Krieg, Norbert (Fern) Krieg, Maurice (Nancy) Krieg, and Jerome Krieg.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all those involved in his home healthcare for many years, especially the caregivers from Opportunity Inc. and to Dr. Steven Nichols and all of the staff at Aspirus Wausau Hospital for the care provided during his remaining days.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 18th at St. Paul Catholic Church, Mosinee. The Rev. Donald Meuret will officiate.
