Martha Marquardt, 97, Mosinee, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2016, at St. Clare’s Hospital, Weston.
She was born March 3, 1919, in Winlock, Wash., the daughter of the late Henry and Laura (Schoettler) Prechel. She married Clifford Marquardt on March 16, 1941, in Waukegan, Ill. He passed away May 4, 1982.
She graduated from Winlock High School in 1937. She moved to Portland, Oregon, and attended the Northwestern School of Commerce. After graduation, she worked briefly for Honeywell Winery and then for the J. K. Gill Co. in the wholesale book department. During the war, she worked for the Office of Emergency Management as a teletype operator.
In 1945 she moved to Knowlton, Wis., when her husband came home from the war. She belonged to the Knowlton Homemakers Club and the local 4-H Club. She was treasurer of the Knowlton School District. She was a member of the Marathon Country Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary as a secretary and the State Auxiliary as secretary. She was a member of the Wausau Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees where she was secretary for several years.
She also worked for F. D. Graham Assoc. Inc. for ten years beginning in 1963.
Martha was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Dancy, and a member of their Ladies Aid and Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society where she held various offices, most recently that of treasurer.
Of her numerous hobbies, genealogy was the most rewarding. She was vice-chairman and membership chairman of the Marathon County Genealogical Society for a number of years. She belonged to several societies within the state as well as other societies in other parts of the country. She was also a member of the Nay-osh-ing Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution in Plover, WI.
Martha was well-known in the Knowlton area for her tasty Christmas coffee cakes, colorful hand-knitted afghans, and large gladiola and iris flower beds.
She is survived by two sons, Mark (Jutta Breyer), Ross (Jennifer Purcell), five grandchildren, and one brother, Paul Prechel. A third son, Jon, passed in 2006 (Marylin Marquardt).
Her family greatly thanks past and present staff and management of Acorn Hill Senior Living Community in Mosinee for their wonderful care and concern for her over the eight years she lived there.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016, at St. John Lutheran Church, Dancy. The Rev. Timothy Roeser will officiate. Burial will be in Mosinee Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Beste Funeral Home, Mosinee. Visitation will be again from 9:30 a.m. Tuesday until time of services at the church.
